Celebrities and government officials are endorsing these products and pledging to stay out of indoor tanning beds. I was reading an article in Cosmopolitan magazine this morning about actress, Kristen Bell and model, Marisa Miller, who have just received Cosmo's first-ever Practice Safe Sun Awards, because they pledged not to "fake bake."
Even though famous faces are making self tanners look like the new it thing, I haven't completely bought in to this. Research has proven that tanning beds and too much time in the natural sun is harmful to skin and can even lead to skin cancer, but the blunt truth is that tanning beds make you tanner. I've tried several self tanner sprays and lotions that promise to make me look bronzed, and instead I look orange and streaky. Often, I don't even look darker; just weird.
I've been working for Clinique at the Oklahoma State Student Union for a year and a half now, and I was required to try their Self Sun Body Airbrush Spray. I was NOT excited about this, because I expected it to look horrible, but I was surprised that I didn't hate it! The product's color is supposed to last for five to seven days, and it did for me. The color isn't the same as a tanning bed would deliver after five to seven days, but it works, and you can feel good about your color because you achieved it safely. The Self Sun Body Airbrush Spray by Clinique has sold me on the idea that self tanners really do work.
Although I'm dragging out my fall/winter clothes and packing away my shorts and tank tops, I still want to keep my healthy summer tan, and I'm going to do that with the help of Clinique at OSU. I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts on practicing self sun, Clinique's product, or any other self tanning products that anyone has tried!

ReplyDeleteI can really identify with this post because skin cancer is something that runs in my family. I know how common it is, and how only a few too many sun burns can result in the loss of a life. It's about time that word got out about alternatives, and not only that, but how natural they look should be just as advertised. I got a spray tan recently and was shocked at how natural it looked. The only downside was that it didn't last very long, but considering the alternatives, I'll stick with the spray tan! Great post.
